Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
